What We Do
-
Fire
When structure fires threaten our community, our firefighters respond with specialized equipment and training to protect lives and property. From house fires to commercial buildings, we're equipped to handle fire emergencies across all 55 square miles of Orcas Island. Our seven strategically located fire stations ensure rapid response times, while our mutual aid partnerships provide additional resources for large incidents.
-
EMS
Our paramedics and EMTs provide advanced life support and basic life support services 24/7 across the island. With two ambulances staffed around the clock and additional units strategically positioned, we respond to medical emergencies from cardiac arrests to traumatic injuries. EMS calls make up approximately 80% of our responses, making this our most active service division.
-
Rescue
When people are trapped, lost, or injured in challenging locations, our technical rescue teams respond with specialized skills and equipment. We handle everything from vehicle extrications and water rescues to searches in Moran State Park and cliff rescues along our rugged coastline. Our rescue capabilities extend both on land and on water, serving the unique needs of island living.
-
Wildland
Protecting our forested island from wildfire requires specialized training, equipment, and coordination with state and federal resources. Our wildland firefighters are certified and equipped to battle brush fires and forest fires before they threaten homes and communities. We work closely with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and neighboring fire departments to provide comprehensive wildfire protection.
-
Non-Emergency Support
Beyond emergency response, we provide essential community services including public education, safety inspections, and community outreach programs. Our dedicated Auxiliary team supports firefighters and EMTs during extended emergencies by providing food and beverages. From CPR classes to fire safety education, these programs help keep our community safe and prepared.
