Fire Extinguisher Safety & Maintenance
Your First Line of Defense Against Fire
A properly maintained fire extinguisher can stop a small fire from becoming a disaster. But only if it works when you need it. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential for your safety.
Annual Inspection is Critical
Check your extinguishers at least once a year:
Pressure gauge should be in the green zone
Pin and seal should be intact
Hose and nozzle should be clear of obstructions
Body should be free of dents, rust, or damage
Mounting bracket should be secure
When to Get Professional Service
Your extinguisher needs professional attention if:
Pressure gauge shows low pressure (not in green zone)
Any visible damage to the body or components
After any use, even partial discharge
Annual maintenance is due
You have questions about its condition
Important Facts
Most extinguishers must be recharged after each use - even if only used briefly
Plastic-head extinguishers cannot be refilled or serviced - they must be replaced when expired or used
Professional maintenance includes thorough inspection, pressure testing, and recharging when needed
