Calling 911 from Cell or Internet Phones

Cell Phone Calls to 911

Important: Your cell call may not reach San Juan County dispatch directly. You might connect to mainland or even Canadian dispatchers.

Always tell the dispatcher:

  • Your exact address and that you're on Orcas Island

  • Your phone number

  • The nature of your emergency

Backup number: If you can't reach 911, call San Juan County directly at (360) 378-4141

Internet (VOIP) Phone Issues

Key problems with VOIP 911 calls:

  • May not show your current location

  • Service outages prevent 911 calls

  • If you move, you must update your address with your VOIP provider

  • Calls while traveling may route to your home area, not to your current location

Best Practice

Use a landline when possible. Traditional phones provide your exact location and callback number automatically.

Accidental 911 Calls

Don't hang up! Stay on the line and explain it was a mistake. The dispatcher needs to confirm you're safe.

Prevent accidental calls:

  • Lock your phone's keypad

  • Remove batteries from old phones before giving them to children

  • Turn off automatic 911 dialing features if available

Bottom Line

When every second counts, make sure dispatchers know exactly where you are and how to reach you.
