San Juan County Fire Protection District #2 provides emergency medical services (advanced life support), fire prevention and suppression, and public education services to all of Orcas Island.
At approximately 55 square miles, and with elevations ranging from sea level to 2,400 feet, the topography of Orcas Island is the most diverse of the San Juan Islands.
Orcas Island Fire & Rescue serves a permanent population of about 5,000 and a summer population of approximately 12,000.

Orcas Island Fire & Rescue was chartered in 1948 under title 52 of the Revised Code of Washington. As San Juan County’s second fire district, its role expanded from an all-volunteer service in the early 1970s to include emergency medical services, and a staff of Firefighter Paramedics, Firefighter EMTs, an EMT Administrative Assistant and the Chief , together with 60+ Volunteer Firefighters, EMTs and First Responders. The district established 24-hour staffing in 2005.
