Kiyomi Farish and 25 other pre-school students from Children’s House visited the Eastsound Fire Station this last week as part of Fire Prevention Education. The “Junior Firefighters” learned about life at the fire station, the special gear needed to stay safe and the emergency response vehicles.

Stop Fire before it Starts!!! Orcas Island Grade School K- 6 participated in a variety of Fire Prevention courses. Grades 1 through 5 toured the new San Juan County tabletop Hazard House and grade 6 got hands-on Fire Extinguisher training with live fire. Kindergarten student Caleb Woods got a chance to try out as a firefighter when Capt. Bob Nutt and Maxx Jones visited his classroom. Students will be participating in a Home Hazard Homework Contest to share their safety training with grown-up to make Orcas a safer place. These programs are sponsored by Orcas Island Fire & Rescue and the San Juan County

5th Grade trains with Live Fire!

Thanks to Susan Risser and her annual Fire Prevention Program, even 5th graders can effectively and safely use a fire extinguisher. The new-formed San Juan County Fire Prevention Coalition along with generous help from the island communities, has purchased a state-of-the-art Fire Extinguisher. Training prop. Friday Harbor Elementary 5th graders were the first to show how fast a fire can be put out with the right training. Some students were able to dose the flames in less than 5 seconds!
