Stryker Chair Received by OIFD

On Saturday, April 12th, the Orcas Island Medical Guild voted to help the Orcas Island Fire Department by funding the purchase of a Stryker Stair Chair.  The device allows EMTs to safely transport patients down stairs, steps and grades.  The department already has one of these devices; but as the recent months have demonstrated, when the department gets calls for aid, they often have two or more calls at the same time.  Having the same device on both ambulances ensures that they will be available and makes training consistent.

In late 2007, the Guild helped purchase advanced airway equipment (CPAP). The CPAP devices have been attributed with saving at least two islander’s lives since then.

This continues a long tradition from the Medical Guild, and other groups, who support our lifesaving mission.

When someone is having a heart attack, seconds count. Getting advanced medical life support to the scene FAST is critical. The Orcas Island Fire Department and the Volunteer Firefighter EMT Association have joined together to provide every emergency responder with an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The $ 21,238.30 for an additional 15 AED units was not in the budget. So the Association went to the community and asked for help. The response was $16,495 in donations! The Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Association was able to fund the balance so the additional 15 Zoll AEDs have been purchased. Thank you!
