Josh Lawson is a Hero

Josh Lawson
was in Computer Applications class on Thursday, Sept.
17 when he noticed is teacher, Paul Evans silently
trying to get his attention. Josh asked if Evans was
okay, then realized his teacher was choking. He
stepped behind Evans and performed the Heimlich
Maneuver three times and lifting his teacher off the
ground. On the third thrust, Josh dislodged the candy
Evans was choking on and saved his life.

The truest form of service is that when given no praise nor reward is expected. Orcas Island Fire & Rescue awarded a certificate of thanks for saving another person’s life without hesitation.

Orcas Fire Honors Heros

Capt. Maxx Jones and Chief Mike Harris present the Guardian Angel Pin to Mathew Mullen for his call to 911 for his mother.
Orcas Fire & Rescue presented 2 Red Helmet Awards at the Orcas Elementary School’s last assembly on Thursday. The first was given to Mackey Carndinale for calling 911 on April 11th 2009 when a mobile home near his house caught fire. Thanks to his quick thinking, the firefighters were able to respond quickly and save the structure from complete destruction. The second award was presented to Mathew Mullen who when faced with the hardest moment anyone can face, reacted quickly and called 911 for his mother. Mathew was also presented with the first Orcas Fire & Rescue Guardian Angel pin for his courage.

Cadet Honored

Firefighter Cadet Honored
Orcas Christian School Sophomore and High-honor student Jamarra Ray Lowry, was honored for her completion of the Orcas Fire & Rescue Firefighter Academy. The course began in November of 2008 and she graduated with honors on April 25th 2009. Jamarra works each summer to pay for her high school tuition and plans to pursue a career in emergency services as a firefighter-paramedic. Her father Dave Lowry was also a volunteer firefighter with the department for several years.

Training Division Chief Patrick Shepler presented new fire recruit Jamarra Ray Lowry with the Excellence in Achievement Award during a school assembly.

Westview Woods Honored

Congratulations to Orcas Island's Westview
Woods on becoming a nationally
recognized Fire Wise Community. Fire Wise Community
President Alison Magner worked on behalf of her
homeowner's association with County Program Advisor
and firefighter on San Juan Island, Ron Garner, to
join the 26 designated groups in San Juan County. The
Fire Wise Program is designed to educate homeowners
how to reduce and even prevent wildfire from
destroying homes, property and lives.

-+Bruce Brackett was honored with his late 25 year pin after 27 years of volunteer service. He is credited with the first improvements to the training division, opening the door to the current high standards firefighters now achieve.

Jeff Jones is currently the longest volunteer member with 31 years. He joined at the age of 18 and has served as firefighter, EMT, Station Lt., Station Captain and Battalion Chief over the years. He is still an active volunteer firefighter, officer and First Responder.
