Washington State Ferry and Orcas Fire Department
Joint Training
Seventeen members of the Orcas Island Fire Department participated in the first of two WS Ferry emergency response training and familiarization exercise offered as a required course for the first quarter of district training. Participants boarded the Klahowya at the Orcas dock and participated in the class while the ship continued its scheduled run. Volunteers discussed techniques for assisting with fire response, vessel evacuation and emergency medical responses. “We got a chance to ask the crew questions and think through details together”, commented Captain Max Jones. “Like the best method to get a patient down extremely steep steps or how the fire sprinkler system works”. The drill concluded with a familiarization of the Sheriff’s largest boat, which has the capacity to transport medical emergencies when air transport is not available.
