Election Letter

Friends,

Without reservation,
I recommend Clyde Duke for Fire Commissioner. He has served as commissioner for six years, with many years of service as a volunteer for the department before that. I have been the recording secretary for the Board of FIre Commissioners for 15 months, so I've had the opportunity to observe his high level of participation, ethics, intelligence, kindness, and energy from a very close vantage point. He has given enormously of his personal time as chairman of the commission and to the department, and waives the stipend for meetings, which I believe amounts to between $10,000 and $15,000 by now.

Clyde has built his contracting business from scratch, and is showing a good profit even in this recession. He does not just manage his company, he is right there with his employees doing the physical work. As well as having a seasoned group of employees, Clyde hires young people who have neither building skills, nor knowledge of how to be a member of the work force. Over time, he helps them develop into individuals with a marketable skill and knowledge of how to be a responsible adult in the working world.

I have never known Clyde to be anything other than honest and direct. He works towards a broad overview on every project, and is organized at implementing and following up on what needs to be done. He is comfortable with saying he doesn't know about or understand an issue, and working with others at solving the problem.

Thanks for considering this recommendation. To continue the safety provided to us by the Orcas Fire and Rescue Department, it is vitally important that all three members of the OIFR Board of Commissioners continue  to maintain the wise and energetic leadership shown by Clyde Duke.
